Common Reasons why FFXI is crashing
  • Not running as administrator (right click run as admin - you can add this in the shortcut properties so you don't have to right click everytime)
  • Graphics driver is not up to date (sometimes the best driver for your GPU is not the latest it is up to you to research)
  • Launcher Plugins - if you use a lot of plugins try running light with just distance, timestamp, tparty, recast for a few days and see if you still crash then add one plugin back every couple of days if this resolves the issue (make sure to disable drawdistance and fps)
  • If you have changed your FPS settings in your launcher comment out or delete this setting so it is not being run until you figure out the source of the problems - this could be it too
  • We recommend using Ashita v3 with our server for best performance - specifically the version packaged with our x64 installer with noupdates enabled, certain versions of launchers may be less stable with our server build
  • Third party programs - which you will be banned for

Performance Issues
Some players have mentioned having issues when in areas with a larger than average number of players. This is typically due to the number of players your client is trying to render. The link below has some good suggestions.. please do not download and install/run any software on your PC unless you know how to avoid virus'.
Also do not use the registry editor if you don't know how to rollback your changes. You can cause major corruption to your operating system.
http://www.ffxiah.com/forum/topic/37945 ... ag-and-you

Some of the good suggestions in the thread above are:
Ingame settings
  • Reduce or disable shadows
    • Menu > Config > Misc
  • Disable weather effects
    • Menu > Config > Misc
  • Lowering the number of "character models displayed"
    • Menu > Config > Misc
Dual-boxing
  • If you're having performance issues while dual-boxing I think it goes without saying that you should probably only single box in situations where you have lots of lag or crash
  • Dual-boxing may be a source of d/cing but this has not been proved, only hypothesized from the way clients are connecting to the server
Config settings
(These settings are in the config app "FINAL FANTASY XI Config.exe" in ..\PlayOnline\SquareEnix\FINAL FANTASY XI\ToolsUS)
  • Make sure gamepad is not enabled when you are not using one
  • Set mipmapping to 1
    • Can be enabled in config app but must use registry editor to view numeric value
  • Setting FFXI processor affinity since FFXI is not designed for multi-core processors
    • Done in task manager see link above
New Laptop (Windows 10) Issues
Atom0s has kindly distributed a way to run FFXI as DX9 on newer laptops which have issues with DX8 games:
